about the red sea series: |
The Vermont Studio Center awarded me a Vermont Artists Week residency in 2009. I chose printmaking over painting, bought some cadmium red, burnt umber, and ultramarine blue printing ink and began without knowing what I wanted to do. The easy-going camaraderie amongst the printmakers was a much-needed break from working alone in my painting studio.
Rolling out colors, I included diaphanous gauze to create form and texture. The more it unraveled and frayed the more abstracted the fabric became.
The title came to me later – in the middle of the night. The redness and evocative, flowing, botanical worlds joined together with my remembrances of Egypt and thus Red Sea. I have recently returned to the series and will see where it takes me.
