about the Seif and Zikir series:

The titles for these series are Arabic words: Zikir meaning a remembrance or almost trance-like act of praying in a repetitive manner and Seif meaning summer.

Working on them has a meditative quality, like practicing the scales on an instrument; I use color within the same format, over and over. I turn the papers around, applying paint with brushes, my fingers, rags, steel wool transparent colors over one another, thick bright colors on top, scraping paint away with a palette knife to create different surfaces.

Even with their small scale, they can become whole worlds unto themselves.
